Astigmatism

This is a very common eye condition that is easily treated with corrective lenses. An astigmatism affects the cornea of the eye. This is a transparent, rounded surface that lies atop the colored iris. The shape of the cornea is very important because it effects how the angle at which light enters the eye. The light that passes through the cornea is directed in a way that ensures it is received properly by the retina. The image received by the retina determines the message that will be transmitted to the brain.

Astigmatism is the term that is used to describe a cornea that is not perfectly rounded. Instead, this transparent surface becomes slightly oblong or skewed. Though this is not noticeable to onlookers, an Austin optometrist can detect the minor defect, which can cause the patient to have difficult seeing things clearly at any distance.

Astigmatism is commonly seen in conjunction with both of the following eye conditions.

Myopia

More commonly known as nearsightedness, this condition is seen very regularly in optometrists’ offices. Millions of people in this country have undergone surgical procedures, or must wear corrective lenses regularly to adjust for the vision complication.

Myopia can also be caused by a change in the shape of the cornea, or it can be a result of the entire eyeball taking on a slightly different form. Either way, the light passing through the cornea is angled improperly, so the message received by the brain is jumbled and the result is a blurry outlook. In many cases, myopia is very minor and requires very little correction. However, some people can face severe myopia, making it impossible for them to see anything at a distance without the aid of glasses or contacts.

The symptoms of myopia are very easy to report in adults. The person will notice that objects at a distance – the television screen, road signs, or the black board in class – appear blurred and are difficult to make out. However, in young children, myopia can go untreated for a long period of time because they do not recognize the blurriness as a problem (often, they never knew any differently). Parents and teachers who know the warning signs can help with early detection of the problem. This includes frequent headaches, squinting, difficulty in school, or a habit of sitting very near the television screen.

Hyperopia

When the blurring doesn’t appear off in the distance, but rather when an object is held close to the face – such as a book, newspaper, or puzzle – a person is said to suffer from hyperopia, or farsightedness. An altered shape of the eye or cornea results in light being cast slightly behind the retina, making the image perceived by the brain blurry.

People who suffer from hyperopia will have frequent headaches, difficulty seeing at night, and may complain of aching eyes, if the condition is not treated. Fortunately, glasses and contacts can easily correct for the misshapen eye and allow a person to see clearly again. Lasik procedures are able to correct this defect today as well.

Again, because children are often unaware that blurriness is a problem, parents should be on the look out for red flags, such as headaches, frequent eye rubbing, or trouble reading. Children with hyperopia who are not treated also run the risk of developing strabismus (crossed eyes).

It’s that time of year again and everyone is in the holiday spirit, but one of the most hated parts of this season is the need for excessive travel. While seeing family and friends is wonderful, getting there can be troubling and for many people it can mean traveling hundreds of miles. If you are one of those who face hours on the road in order to reach your loved ones, then there are a few things that you should be considering, aside from what shirts to pack.

A car that breaks down along the way from point A to point B is not something that anyone wants to think about during the holidays, but the unfortunate truth is that it happens to many people this time of year and often when they are far from the car- or Austin motorcycle repair shops that they are familiar with. Between unusual driving conditions, unfamiliar roads, and the extra burden placed on vehicles, the chances of having car trouble during your travels is more likely than one would hope.

In order to keep yourself safe, it is good to know what to do in an emergency. The first thing that you should do, before you even leave the driveway is be sure that your vehicle is prepared to make the trip. Have you changed the oil recently? Is the gas tank full? Have the battery and the tires been checked recently? Has the window washer fluid been refilled? Do you have an emergency kit packed in the glove box or in the trunk, just in case? These are things to consider and can help to ensure your trip is as enjoyable as possible.

If your car does break down on the highway, the best thing that you can do is to get to the right hand side of the road or to a nearby auto repair Austin. Even on a flat tire, you should continue moving the car until you are off the highway and out of the way of oncoming traffic. Your life is worth more than the rim of your vehicle. Of course, there are exceptions to this rule. If your car begins to smoke or you see flames coming from the hood, then you will obviously want to stop and get out as quickly as possible. Just as you would on the side of the road, activate your flashers (this triangle-marked button) should be easily visible on the dash of your car, truck or van. Unless you do see smoke or flames, it is better to keep everyone inside the car until help arrives.

A fully charged cell phone should be the first item on the list of safety kit items. Nowadays, many cars are equipped with built in help lines. Along with this, blankets, extra hats, mittens, and other items for warmth are recommended. A flare or two stored in the trunk, a flashlight, a car jack, and an empty gas can are recommended essentials as well. You never know when something will go wrong.

In most places a roadside vehicle or police vehicle will be sent to assist you until a tow truck can be brought in. During this time, you have the right to request a shop to bring your vehicle to for transmission repair Austin, TX, or any other type of engine work that might be needed.

What is HCG? This hormone that is naturally occurring during pregnancy has seen increased interest in recent years. Though known commonly as hCG, it is more formerly called the Human chorionic gonadotropin hormone. It is most commonly seen in pregnant woman, but can also be produced by certain forms of tumors. Composed of more than two hundred amino acids, hCG is now being considered an effective form of weight loss supplement. It is theorized that the release of this hormone unleashes a number of fat stores, which can lead to quick weight loss.

How Effective is It? Though its necessary role in pregnancy is undeniable, as with any weight loss oriented tool, there comes much speculation about the effectiveness of the hCG diet. However, its successfulness in both men and women has been demonstrated numerous times. The average participant in this diet plan reports losing up to one pound per day, which would be impossible with even the most strict diet and exercise plan. Losing a single pound requires cutting caloric intake by thirty-five hundred calories or doing enough exercise to burn the same amount. With the average person requiring approximately two thousand calories per day, it is easy to see how difficult it would be to lose one pound per day without the added assistance of hCG.

Drops Versus Injections hCG for weight loss comes in three different forms. It can be administered as injections, as prescribed pharmaceutical drops, or homeopathic drops. Though the shots are the most common form of this hormone therapy and have been administered since the 1950’s, many people consider the drops to be preferential. Today, injections can be self-administered and for those who have trouble with the idea of self-injected medical spas that offer services like Botox, Latisse application, and other cosmetic applications will also manage the shots.

Still, though, some people simply cannot get past the needle. The drops, for that reason, have an advantage. Drops are placed under the tongue and are absorbed into the blood stream from there. It does, of course, require a more concentrated dose of hCG in this form because the absorbtion is not as complete as the injection method. Nevertheless, the weight loss impact has not been shown to vary substantially between forms. Homeopathic drops, are less expensive, but because they are not the same prescription strength as the pharmaceutical version, they will need to be used more frequently to obtain the same results – between two and six times per day. All three methods are most successful when paired with a healthy, well-balanced diet.

Will it Show up on a Pregnancy Test? Another advantage that the hCG drops have over the injections is that pregnancy tests will not be fooled by them. A woman would have to wait up to fourteen days after an injection to get an accurate reading, but can take a test immediately after using the drops without need for concern. It should be noted that the injections give the false positive because they provide a large dose of the hormone linked to successful weight loss.

There are many misconceptions about cataracts, which affect millions of people each year, in this country alone. A better understanding of the condition, its causes, and the possible treatments can help and individual deal with the problem should he or she ever face it.

Where do Cataracts Form?

In many online publications, it is written that cataracts occur on the clear surface of the eye. This is not entirely accurate. In fact, the clouding overtakes the eye’s lens, which is transparent and made of water and protein fiber, but it is found within the eye, behind the iris. This component of the human eye allows light to pass to the back of the eye, where the messages can be properly passed along to the brain.

Can Laser Surgery Remove the Clouding?

Though there are cataract surgeries today that are very effective at removing the issue and restoring vision for the patient, they are not what many people believe them to be. A laser will not remove the cataract from the lens, Austin ophthalmologists will ensure that the lens itself, which contains the clouding factor, is replaced with an artificial lens in order for the patient to see properly again.

The cataracts will not return after surgery because the artificial lens is not susceptible, but clouding can later occur in the membrane that holds the new replacement. Glaucoma specialists in Austin can treat this as well.

Who Develops Cataracts?

This is another point that has a large percentage of the population confused. Many believe that it is only the older generation that can develop the clouding of the lenses, but that is not the case. While, yes, they are certainly most commonly seen in people over the age of sixty-five, they are found in younger individuals as well.

There are many causes of cataracts that can just as easily affect younger people. Medical conditions such as diabetes have long been tied to the formation of the clouding. An eye doctor for diabetes will likely recommend very frequent appointments to track possible onset of this and other eye conditions. There is also risk of cataracts when taking certain medications, but congenital cataracts can be present at birth simply because of a genetic link. There are many other causes as well making anyone and everyone susceptible to the formation of cataracts to some degree.

Is Cataract Surgery Safe?

Cataract specialists have been performing these corrective operations for quite some time now with very high success rates – at or above ninety-five percent. There are always risks with any surgical procedure and these will be discussed at length before a patient opts to go through with it, but the outcomes have proven to be very promising, providing clearer vision immediately. Additionally, recovery time is minimal, as compared to other types of operations. Most people can return to their normal way of life right away, with only slight restrictions regarding lifting and bending. For some, corrective lenses can be totally discarded. For others, there may be the need for a lesser prescription to correct in the closer vision ranges.

If you’re one of the many parents of children who wear glasses, the question of contacts is bound to come up sooner or later. Before you make any decisions, though, your first stop should be in the office of your Austin eye doctor. They’ll be able to help you make the final choice.

The first aspect you should take into account is whether or not your child is actually ready to deal with contacts. While lots of parents are worried about giving their child contacts too early, most ophthalmologists will tell you that it’s not as much age as maturity that is a concern. In the physical sense, even the smallest children can deal with contacts, but the real step is making sure your child can insert them and remove them as necessary.

The second aspect that must be considered is the type of lenses that are best for your child. At one time, there were hard and soft lenses. These days, though, hard lenses are a thing of the past. Originally made from glass, hard lenses were created to be worn for short periods of time, and the drawbacks were immense. They didn’t allow oxygen to the eyes, creating some serious issues. These days, lenses come in two primary types – gas permeable lenses, which are the primary replacement for hard contact lenses, and soft contact lenses. Soft lenses have several categories, though. There are extended wear choices, daily disposables, and toric contact lenses. The best type for your child depends on both his or her vision as well as the child. Much of the decision will rely on your child’s unique needs. For example, if your child regularly engages in sports like swimming or water polo, daily disposable lenses may work out best. If you think they’d do well sleeping in the lenses, you may want to move forward with extended wear lenses. Keep in mind, though, that part of the best choice will rely on your child’s unique eye issues, so only an eye doctor can tell you what may work out best.

The third aspect you must consider is the cost of lenses. Naturally, there will be an initial cost involved for the exam and the lenses themselves, but if you move forward with disposable lenses of any type, there will be ongoing costs. Additionally, there will be costs throughout the year for solution, lens cases, and any additional cleaning materials your child’s lenses may need. It’s essential that you talk to your eye doctor about what kinds of ongoing costs you can expect for lenses. While you can reorder lenses through various online shops at a discounted rate, you’ll still have some cost involved, and understanding what to expect at the outset is essential.

Before you sit down to talk with your
ophthalmologist about the best contact lens choice for your child, it’s best to make a list of any questions both you and your child have to help make certain this transition will work out for all three of you.

Over and over again on the internet, you will find people discussing at-home treatments for mimicking the effects of Botox injections. Occasionally, people are seeking these alternatives due to the issue of cost, but in many cases, the choice to opt away from the facial spa treatment has more to do with fear of the unknown. There have been many horror stories about this and other injected substances that have left a large portion of the population a bit gun shy – or, in this case, needle shy. Here’s a quick guide to most of the possible complications and the likelihood of each, so that you can make a more educated decision as to whether Botox is right for you.

As with any procedure done for the purpose of beauty, there is the possibility of side effect with filler injections. The good news is that those risks are minimal. Typically considered the most common side effect is eyelid droop. This occurs when the technician brings the injections too close to the upper eyelid. What was meant to fill crow’s feet or fine lines can become a lasting paralyzing agent in the eyelid. The droop can remain for months before completely resolved.

Injected substances also come with a risk of allergic reaction. This is very rare with Botox, but it can happen and would result in rash, hives, itching, and in even worse situations, could get as bad as to cause throat swelling and difficulty breathing. Furthermore, most facilities that offer this procedure will also warn that the patient receive immediate attention if there is lasting bleeding at the sight of the injection, if he or she experiences chest pain, or if vision is disrupted in any way. This could be a result of actual eye condition or as a result of the droopy lid, as described above. All symptoms could point to a more severe issue and one should not hesitate to get medical attention.

In extremely rare instances, severe complications can arise, including fainting, loss of strength, paralysis, seizures, of persistent weakness, among other things. It is important to understand that these situations are not common at all, and some facilities will never have a patient experience severe complications. The chances that you will be among those that do have trouble with this injected substance are slim to none, especially the most severe of those problems. However, it is good to know what the risks are and if you are still interested in pursuing the procedure, it is also essential to choose the right facility.

The spas in Austin TX most commonly featuring this option will typically feature other cosmetic processes from spray tan to electrolysis. Remember, a good medical spa does not set out to deceive the residents of Austin, TX. This is the customer base and lying or withholding information would only serve to sever the existing relationship. Thus, most professional medical salons or facial spa will be happy to answer any questions you may have regarding whichever procedure you are interested in.

The question of whether to opt for tradition braces or for the new clear aligners is one that many children, parents, and adults are asking today. For some, the price alone will make the decision, but for others – including those with good dental insurance policies – the choice is not so obvious.

Invisialign is a system used for realigning teeth in much the same way standard braces do in Austin, TX, but though they can offer the same results, they are not used in the same way. This means that they come with their own set of benefits and downfalls. To begin this process, the Austin dentist will likely refer the patient to an orthodontist, as which point impressions of the teeth will be taken. This is done so the clear aligning devices can be custom matched to the mouth of the patient. The first set will be put in place and kept there for approximately three weeks, at which time the patient must return to the office to be fit with a new set of aligners. Each new set – and there will be several – is meant to direct the teeth into a more desirable placement.

The upside of this type of alignment system is that it is clear. Onlookers will barely be able to detect the apparatus when in place, as compared to traditional braces which scream out for attention. This is excellent news for teenagers, as others can be cruel with teasing about such oral devices. Furthermore, the outer surface of these aligners is smooth. There are no wires or brackets to cut, scrape or irritate the inside of the mouth. However, on the other hand, Invisalign requires several computer generated models to be crafted and fit into place. Each time a new set is fit in the mouth, the bill goes up. It should also be noted that not everyone is an ideal candidate for this procedure. For instance, children who still have baby teeth in place cannot use this system. It is intended for adults and older teens and can only be used to move the teeth in certain directions. Thus, it is not for everyone. Only an orthodontist can determine whether or not you fit the necessary criteria.

So, what about those who wish for the discrete nature of Invisalign, but cannot afford it or simply aren’t fit for the clear aligners? There are other options today. Standard braces are extremely effective and may not need to be worn for as long as they were by past generations and improved methods of Austin teeth whitening can erase any signs of their existence once removed. However, for those who simply don’t want to deal with the look of them at all, new braces have been created which affix to the back of the teeth, thus making them virtually invisible to onlookers. In addition to these methods, there is also the possibility to use clear ceramic braces.

All of these options and a comparison of them should be discussed with your orthodontist before deciding which option is right for you.

Regardless of how hard one tries to avoid feelings of vanity, the truth is that the vast majority of the population has a problem with the idea of growing – and looking – old. Thus, the scientists and engineers have come up with several different means to achieving a less wrinkled face, even as the consumer reaches his or her forties, fifties and beyond. One of those inventions, which is receiving a great deal of praise is the dermal filler, and among the most popular brands is Juvaderm.

What Is That On Your Face? Before one can understand exactly how dermal fillers work, he or she must first understand that there exists two types of wrinkles. The first is the dynamic wrinkle. This group includes wrinkles caused by regular muscle activity, such as brow, eye, and frown lines. These can be eliminated with a muscle relaxer, such as Botox, which can be injected at a medical spa. On the other hand, though, is a type of wrinkle called static. These wrinkles, which are more associated with the forces of gravity and general aging of the skin are much more stubborn. They include the deep set wrinkles that some people get that span from the nose to the mouth. This is the type of wrinkle that dermal fillers were created for. Those like Juvederm do not require hospital visitation and can be done in the same atmosphere as Georgetown TX laser hair removal.

What is Juvederm? Juvederm is one of the varieties of dermal filler, made of hyaluronic acid. Injected under the skin, it can push the skin upward, giving it a more plump, tight look and doing away with the wrinkles. Because it is a foreign substance being injected into the body, natural collagen is formed as well, which is a known element in maintaining a youthful appearance. Juvederm’s effects can last up to one year, during which time it is slowly absorbed by the body. The best part is that this wrinkle reducer is quick and easy. The injections typically take less than one hour, can be done on the average lunch break, and are administered at a Geortgetown TX day spa.

Any Alternatives? While dermal fillers are an alternative in themselves – to the much more invasive face lift – some people simply can’t handle the idea of having the injections done. Juvederm has shown great results with very few and infrequent side effects, such as redding, swelling, and the occasional allergic reaction in highly sensitive individuals. However, if you are one of those that doesn’t feel comfortable with the idea, then it is good to know that there are other alternatives today as well. For instance, microdermabrasion is a non-evasive procedure, which is meant to remove the outermost layer of dead skin cells. In doing so, it speeds cell regeneration, evens the surface of the skin, improves blood flow, and diminishes many of the fine lines and wrinkles that may be forming. While this method is not going to have the same effects as a dermal filler, it is good for those that want a non-evasive alternative.

We all know when we should go to the emergency room. If you’ve got a broken bone, or another serious issue that has occurred and the regular doctor is closed, or they can’t fit you in, that’s when it’s time to head to the emergency room. But many people don’t know when they should go to the emergency dentist’s office. They tend to wait and wait until their teeth get to the point where no matter what a dentist does, they can’t be saved. There are a number of reasons why a person may want to go to an emergency Austin dental center.

Tooth Loss or Damage

It’s Saturday afternoon and you’re playing ball with your friends or children in the park. Someone hits a ball straight towards you and you use your mouth to stop it. When you finally stop seeing stars you realize that you not only have a great deal of blood coming from your mouth, but a tooth has been knocked out or damaged. Many people would chalk this situation up to a loss and would believe that there was nothing that they could do. But if this type of situation occurs, that’s when you should go to the emergency dental office to get emergency tooth repair done.

When it comes to treating situations like this, the faster the situation is looked at and treated, the more likely you will be to be able to keep your tooth. Emergency dentists have a number of techniques that they can use to not only reattach a tooth that has been knocked out (always put it in milk if you find it – it betters the odds of the tooth being able to be reattached) but they can also fix problems like cracks or chips.

But what if the problem isn’t a break or tooth that has been knocked out, but is a problem that happened because of another dental issue? For instance many people get cheap fillings put in their mouth because they don’t have the funds available to get more expensive fillings. And, many times, cheap fillings are absolutely fine. But sometimes they’re not, and if you’re in a situation where the filling has fallen out, and it’s near midnight on a Friday night, you may want to contact the emergency dentist’s office. They may be able to put the filling back in or to give you new, tooth colored fillings that will stay in better. Or they may tell you to wait until
your dentist’s office opens – but you’ll never know until you call.

The emergency dentist’s office should never be used on a whim, but if you’ve got a serious dental issue going on, it’s a good idea to contact the dentist’s office. If they can help you, they will, and if they feel that you can wait, they’ll advise you to wait until the dentist’s office has opened, and they may even be able to get you in to see the dentist very quickly.
